Email Marketing: Links pay the most, clicked the least

According to separate studies released by StrongMail and ShareThis, links placed in emails have a higher conversion rate than links placed in Facebook, Twitter, or web badges. Although emails tended to lead to a higher percentage of conversions (i.e. sales and subscriptions), email links also had the highest percentage of actual link ignores where users more often ignored email links.

Alternative Music/Media Player Worth a Look

Most of us have used the standard music players. Winamp is relatively light weight and has some really cool features such as Winamp Remote (full streaming web access to your entire music library from anywhere…including your mobile phone). iTunes is crisp, well thought-out, and works great with your iPhone too, but is almost ridiculously slow when run in Windows. And then there is the standard-shipped Windows Media Player. Microsoft has been attempting to up-the-ante on it for years now, but it’s just not that great and shows slow growth and …

iPhone not the Business Solution We Need

The iPhone is a great phone…it has changed the way I access the digital world. However, many business features of the phone have been missing or janked since day 1. Revealing the complacency in the Apple’s business aspirations, Galen Gruman makes note of the most recent dropped ball- no email access via encrypted microsoft exchange server 2007:
Fixing a major but unacknowledged bug in the operating system, last week’s iPhone OS 3.1 update has rendered most iPhones and all iPod Touches incompatible with Exchange 2007 servers that require on-device data be …

Enhanced Video of the Moon Landing Now Available

embedded by Embedded Video

Although the only version of the moon landing viewed by the public is the live broadcast view, John Sarkissian, a CSIRO scientist, has been on the lookout for high quality back up tapes of the footage. No luck so far, but they have released enhanced video that cleans up details in the live broadcast.

VC Funds Shrink 82 Percent in Q2

Venture capital and talk surrounding internet start ups is getting stiffer. This news is not surprising considering the state of the economy- online entrepreneurs need to take this as an indication that, as it should be, a properly market-tested BETA is essential to garnering attention for your initial funding. The article below confirms my recent discussions with a New York-based early stage venture capital firm that asserted, “we’re looking for funding too; we should be getting more capital by the end of the year.”

Augmented Reality Technology and Communication

The video below represents a new cutting-edge technology that again, reshapes our communications and challenges our control over how we communicate. We could say first their was virtual reality. Then there was Minority Report. Now there is Augmented Reality (reality augmented by technology with communication tools built on the web and displayed through a “window”…in this case, the window being an iPhone).
Before you watch the video though, take a moment to read my considerations on the impact of a new technology such as Augmented Reality.

Google’s Chrome OS to Compete with Windows 7

Lest we forget, when it comes to technology, innovation is always welcome. It’s not about culture (although Mac has successfully kept itself from dying off in part through marketing some sort of nerdy computer culture), it’s not about brand name, and it’s not even about price all the time (as Microsoft’s new ads are trying to spin things).

Q3/Q4 IT Spending Continues to Drop

I guess this news is bitter sweet for IT service and product providers across the globe. With the recession looming over the entire industry, it’ll be important to keep an eye on these numbers especially if you are looking to make money on IT investments.
Similar to the slight increase projected for 2010 for the software industry, global advertising has hit a low point and may also show signs of a slight recovery in 2010.

Iran Takes Censorship Route on its Citizens’ Internet

This is a defining moment in Iran’s modern history; the people of Iran face questions concerning authority in both leadership and in information. Here’s the latest news on some actions taken by the Iranian government to force a cessation to the dispersion of critical communications.
Iran’s government in recent days has tried to cut off Internet access for most of its election protestors by shutting down routers at the nation’s perimeters, ripping satellite dishes off roofs, cutting cables and turning off telephone switching networks.
Iran, in effect, has declared cyberwar on itself. …

Notable – Web-based Website Review App

For those who need a better reviewing process of their team’s websites, Notable may be for you. The functionality seems very promising for effective team-based reviewing, but the issue for me is the price.
I just don’t see a large chunk of their market dropping $44, $69, or $119 per month for this. Maybe if it included OS/Browser testing too. For most small businesses, free social bookmarking/notation apps (Diigo, MyStickies, etc)  with privacy settings set will have to do for now until Notable lowers their prices or offers a free account …

MS Money Succumbs to Competition, Closes Doors

MS Money had THE foothold in the home finances software niche for years. With the rise of online finance software such as Mint, and through Quicken’s continual market penetration by connection to TurboTax, Microsoft was forced to close the doors on its Money product.
With banks, brokerage firms and Web sites now providing a range of options for managing personal finances, the consumer need for Microsoft Money Plus has changed. After …

Chinese Government Pre-installs Censoring on ALL PCs

The Chinese government is requiring all PC makers selling PCs into China to include a government-created software that will allow the powers-that-be to control the content that is served up on a computer. This is extremely detrimental for Chinese freedom of information.
In the coming weeks, we’ll hopefully know more about this software and what its effects may be on the content allowed to pass through to the Chinese population. Right now, here is what we know…
