While most articles have been written focusing on specific winners and losers of this patent war between every mobile OS shop and the respective mobile hardware manufacturers, the real winners include each and every individual that gains some sort of clue about the future landscape of technology patents in the US and abroad from the decisions (and non-decisions) being made. With patents covering such basic software methods as “identifying a piece of information from a string of text and providing a context menu based on the identified information” it is of paramount importance that the bounds to these lawsuits be set firmly and swiftly in order to inform the existing market and more importantly, the market of technology innovation. Watch these play out to know more about how to navigate these careful waters while gathering investment or launching into a new venture. We won’t get answers overnight, but each battle will give us a better idea of the direction of technology patents and where your business may be exposed to surprise competition.

Google’s web indexing system that was released last year, Caffeine, has been boosted with a double shot of urgent results. According to their blog post, Google has identified the following types of searches to make sure that the results you find aren’t from stale sources:

• Recent events or hot topics. For recent events or hot topics that begin trending on the web, you want to find the latest information immediately. Now when you search for current events like [occupy oakland protest], or for the latest news about the [nba lockout], you’ll see more high-quality pages that might only be minutes old.

• Regularly recurring events. Some events take place on a regularly recurring basis, such as annual conferences like [ICALP] or an event like the [presidential election]. Without specifying with your keywords, it’s implied that you expect to see the most recent event, and not one from 50 years ago. There are also things that recur more frequently, so now when you’re searching for the latest [NFL scores], [dancing with the stars] results or [exxon earnings], you’ll see the latest information.

• Frequent updates. There are also searches for information that changes often, but isn’t really a hot topic or a recurring event. For example, if you’re researching the [best slr cameras], or you’re in the market for a new car and want [subaru impreza reviews], you probably want the most up to date information.

This change in Google’s search algorithm will affect a large chunk of web searches, around 35% of all search traffic. SEO experts have some work ahead of them to make sure that their client’s strategies are up-to-date with Google’s changes. Writing longer emails or documents on a pocket-friendly phone is pretty cumbersome, even in 2011. That’s why most folks have been looking forward to the iPhone’s iOS5 and the release of Assistant. Assistant is going to be released in just a few days, and we’ll be able to test the hottest natural language-to-text tool out there. But- is there another way to type quickly other than speech-to-text?

Expecting the launch of a new device today from Apple, fanboys & girls around the world are highly anticipating the news that will come from Apple’s Cupertino campus event today @ 1PM EST. But will the hardware live up to the hype and set the tone for continued Android market competition?

Yes, we’ve already heard about iOS5, now I want to see a device from the future!

Well, it might not be that forward thinking. Most reports are showing that the iPhone 4S will be released and it will look pretty much like the iPhone 4 with some advancements in basic components, such as upgraded camera sensor, antenna, and processor (iffy). With any luck, it will at least ship with the ability to record 1080p video. But while the phone won’t be breaking new ground in its design, it doesn’t have to. The iPhone’s design is already iconic and sticking with a similar look for now will allow an iOS spotlight until the iPhone 5 mixes it up next year.

No, the iPhone 4S is basically the iPhone 4. Boo.

Well, no one will know for certain until 1PM EST today, but don’t get too discouraged. Some of the less splashy hardware additions will actually work quite swimmingly with iOS5′s new features. And this almost certainly means a drop in price for the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3G models. And remember, right now, the iOS5 release needs to be the big star. The majority of the market cares more about the OS than the hardware. Most baby boomers aren’t even sure really what a processor does, but email formatting and full-text searches, split keyboard and an easy to use notification area, this is the phone in many cases. The weight of that extra “S” will be enough to sell devotees, and the pricing drops on the older models will further Apple’s market penetration.

3. SamePoint – Plug in a keyword and SamePoint has a helpful Top Conversations tab that will identify influential conversations around your brand.

4. Trendistic – This tool is helpful as it not only shows you how a brand or topic trends over time, but you can go back in time and view the relevant tweets.

5. BackType – This tool will keep a Tweet History based on your brand’s URL or your TwitterID. Try Klout as well to see if you can gain more info on your Twitter account.

I’m an advocate for open and clear communication with users about where their information is collected and where it goes. We want to give users a more tailored browsing experience so that advertising doesn’t have to be a black space to ignore, but rather a colorful opportunity to connect with a brand you may not have acknowledged before. Over the past few years, I’ve been one of the many of my generation that like to stand on the margins of emerging web technology. As one of these dorky adventurers, I’ve taken a lot of risks with my own time to dive into lots of waves- some are great for surfing…others were choppy and died quickly. No pun intended toward Google Wave…especially since that was one of the one’s that quickly made a baby splash and then dissipated. Another lost soul for me was Foursquare…I loved the idea, and liked the application, but without a core group of friends diving in alongside me…it was just me sending out information about my trends of consumerism and travel for any creep that would want to know when I’m out of town so that they could break into my house (not like there’s much in there to steal anyway…other than my Sonos system uhh..I mean..alarm system; stay away).

Have you tried to jump on any recent tech bandwagons just to realize that the ride is freakin wagon bumpy?

One bright spot in my recent WHOA adventures though (the lazy way to say Web 2.0) has had to be Fast Society. It allows you to group text with friends (they don’t need the app), pin point locations, and make quick conf calls regardless of the size of your group. Think long lost college buddies that you haven’t seen in…6 months. Let’s head to Vegas. Scratch that, too expensive, and Chet has a strict budget. Let’s head to Atlanta, GA…I call the double bed (everyone else gets stuck with a couch). Boom- start up Fast Society. I invite all 6 guys on the app and they respond. Chet has an old Nokia, but he’s still good to go.

We can’t all arrive on the same night, but Fast Society allows us to text back and forth as though we’re all there already. Plus, you can see where your other friends are on the way down. If you live in a big city, it’s even better. The key with Fast Society is that it’s based around an event or a time period. A purpose to get together and move. Move towards art or a movie- or move the body towards the dance flo. Anyway- this service has actually broken through the normal buzz and fizz out of typical WHOA apps for me personally…has there been a recent app or service for you all that has stood out from the crowd?

That’s what your kids’ kids will say when you told them email had almost been replaced back in 2009. Google Wave has been slated to be shut down as a standalone product, according to Google’s Official blog. Google will continue maintaining the site until the end of 2010, but will not invest additional resources for future innovation of the product.

This will not come as a shocker to many of you who have actually tried to use the product. Low adoption rates and various UI question marks bludgeoned the product’s prospects of succeeding.

With the release of HP’s Envy laptop line earlier this year, many consumers who had previously considered the old “Hewlett Packard” brand as being a fading Dell competitor began to see glimmers of brilliance. The knockout combo of form factor, power, and suave design mimicry allowed HP to parachute back into the international game to compete in elegance alongside Apple and some of Sony’s devices.

Now that the iPad is seeping into the market, HP has another shot to strike while the iron is hot by spending a lot of money to upgrade and prepare their purchased Palm webOS for everyday tablet use. Keep in mind that HP did a great job converting over Voodoo’s Envy for its current Envy line back in 2008. As long as they continue to pay attention to the details, I’ll be a fan waiting on the sideline before jumping straight into an iPad purchase- especially since webOS doesn’t ignore the valid existence of Flash, unlike the iPad.
