Hiring Trend: Nerd Herd Slows, More Management

We’ve seen a monumental trend toward a web developer/programmer/designer hiring black hole. You couldn’t throw enough talent in to close it up. With the continued shoring up of talent from commission-based head hunters such as Aquent, your company is probably planning on a 2-4 month hiring process.
JobWire is showing how this trend is slowing, but I think this is a small blip within a necessary cycle to pull in better management. Look for the next 2-3 years to keep showing a positive increase in the demand for quality developers.
Especially in Washington, DC – If you own or operate a company with web developers and haven’t thought about how to keep your good ones around…you better be prepared for long journey to replace the ones you lose.

It is interesting how middle management (Director-level) is increasing the most. Hopefully, companies are hiring directors with development experience and communication skills so they can create a beneficial bridge between the development team and senior management and the client. That’s a hard skill-set to come by as most developers (and designers for that matter) fall into the introvert category, but tactfully communicating the pros and cons of technology decisions is crucial to a successful interactive product.
The funny thing is, most IT Directors I know are jumping ship, so companies have to find a way to motivate everyone. From the cases I’ve seen, usually, that is simply giving them the proper structure and support to create a quality product with a team that they enjoy working with.
