Surprise! More women use “social networks” online than men
So I’m probably not the only one who is NOT surprised that more women use online social networks than their male counterparts.
Studies show the obvious age trends per each generation’s level of immersion into web technology via “the computer,” but also show heavy trend lines towards female users outnumbering male users.
Breuss and Pearson’s Interpersonal Rituals in Marriage and Adult Friendship published in 1997 covered a type of social networking trend in women. They found that the highest contradiction between perceived needs between married men and women was found within the autonomy-connection tension.
As noted in a research paper I wrote a few years ago: “As Pawlowski notes, this suggests that social networks may hold a heavier weight for women as the relationship is being formed.”
Why do you think more women are using social networks? (due to the effects of culture? biology? religion?)

hey jarv! this doesn’t surprise me a bit… overall, i think relationship building and maintaining is more of a priority for women than men. take for example, my facebook train of thought just now: liz commented on a pic of us today (how often do guys comment on photos in comparison to girls, i’d like to know) and i see that she has this great new profile pic. “i wonder if she has put other wedding pics up,” i think. so i go to her profile, and see that you’ve tagged her in a couple. i go to yours in the hopes that you’ve put up more, and then start reading all your blog titles, thus finding this fascinating article. in general, its a commonly known fact that women are better communicators than men, and so it only makes sense that we are going to seek out and enjoy whichever modes of communication (phone, social networking, etc) we come across. do you think it sounds too harsh to say that (in general) women are more interested in each others lives than men are? or at least more interested in a larger number of people’s lives?
Lauren, I’d think you’d really enjoy checking out Tim Keller’s “Marriage as Completion” oration. He has two full studies on Gender Roles that are really easy to listen to. You can purchase each mp3 for $2.50 from his online store.
