You didn’t know it…but you’ve opted-in to share your browsing habits

NAI Opt Out Behavioral Advertising
I’m an advocate for open and clear communication with users about where their information is collected and where it goes. We want to give users a more tailored browsing experience so that advertising doesn’t have to be a black space to ignore, but rather a colorful opportunity to connect with a brand you may not have acknowledged before. But did you know that your browsing patterns and the content you view is being shared more and more everyday with 3rd party advertising systems? I’ve found a tool that will help you to opt-out of this data sharing if you’d like to remain anonymous while clicking around.
And let’s face it, advertising is meant to sell things. So there’s money involved. And where money is involved, this is where we need to pay special attention to business ethics making sure that checks and balances are in place to inform the browsing public about innovations in marketing that may directly butt up against their personal privacy policy. While I prefer to see more relevant ads (at this point, the pros outweigh the cons for me), this isn’t an advertising environment to please everyone. It probably rubs most people wrong. If they knew it was happening!
If you’d like to guarantee that your browsing isn’t being documented for behavioral advertisements, then check out this NAI Opt-Out tool. This will allow you to opt-out from most advertising cookies. Also, if you feel like being doubly careful, visit the privacy section for the “ShareThis” button; you can opt out there as well.
